The joy and beauty of Edo painting from the Price Collection,here to support and energize Tohoku recovery.

Duration:March 1 (Fri) to May 6 (Mon / substitute holiday),2013

Drawn from the Price Collection in the United States, which comprises some of the best works by Ito Jakuchu and other leading Edo-period artists, this exhibition presents the beautiful and sometimes humorous world of Edo paintings through a rich variety of works featuring depictions of animals, female beauty (bijin-ga), narratives (monogatari-e) and the seasonal beauty of nature.

Feature exhibition

The Lords of Sendai Domain: Thirteen Generations of Date-Clan Rulers from Masamune to Yoshikuni

Duration: May 21 (Tue) to June 30 (Sun), 2013

The Sendai domain (han) was founded by Date Masamune. Ruled by thirteen generations of lords, who were beset by problems such as internal power struggles, economic difficulties and lack of adult heirs, Sendai remained a powerful fiefdom boasting an income of 620,000 koku until it was defeated in the Boshin War. This exhibition presents the life and rule of each lord in an easy-to-understand way, using paintings, original correspondence, armor and other historical materials.

Pilgrimage to Omi: Buddhist Treasures from the Shiga Prefectural Biwako Cultural History Museum

Duration: July 12 (Fri) to August 25 (Sun)

Shiga Prefecture was historically called “Omi,” and is a rich repository of Buddhist art and other cultural artifacts. This exhibition showcases treasures from the collection of Shiga Prefectural Biwako Cultural History Museum, which has contributed significantly to the preservation of Shiga Prefecture’s cultural assets.

Special exhibition commemorating 400 years since the departure of the Keicho Mission to Europe

Date Masamune’s Dream—The Keicho Mission to Europe and the Namban Culture.

Duration: October 4 (Fri) to November 17 (Sun), 2013

2013 marks the 400th year since Date Masamune’s diplomatic mission to Europe, the Keicho Mission, set sail for Europe. Through exhibits that include the national treasure Keicho keno shisetsu kankei shiryo (Date Masamune's Mission to Rome in 1613) and other wide-ranging cultural materials from Japan, the Vatican, Italy and Spain, the exhibition examines the background leading up to Masamune’s decision to dispatch the mission, and facts about the mission.

Special exhibition

Horyuji Temple: Prayer and Form (tentative title)

Duration: March 1 (Sat) to April 13 (Sun), 2014

To pray for the revitalization of Tohoku and Japan on the third anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake, the exhibition brings together treasures from Horyuji Temple, a World Heritage site, as well as artworks created by personages related to Tokyo University of the Arts (or its predecessor Tokyo Bijutsu Gakko), which has been instrumental in preserving the Horyuji Temple treasures for later generations since the times of Okakura Tenshin.
