In the late 1920s, Japanese philosopher Muneyoshi Yanagi and his circle of artist-craftsmen friends promoted the idea that everyday utilitarian goods can inherently be as beautiful as works of fine art. Their efforts became known as the Mingei (Folk Crafts) Movement.

This exhibition, organized to mark the 50th anniversary of the Miyagi Mingei Association, presents works that opened Yanagi’s eyes to the beauty of Mingei, examples of local Japanese folk crafts featured in Yanagi’s book Teshigoto no Nihon (Handicrafts of Japan), and the Mingei Map of Japan created by textile artist Keisuke Serizawa. The exhibition draws from the excellent collection of the Japan Folk Crafts Museum in Tokyo to showcase the Japanese handicraft traditions rediscovered by Yanagi.
